It’s about understanding the signals, lights, and radio procedures that keep everyone safe and coordinated. Here’s a guide to the most important signals and radio rules every U.S. boater should know.
Why Signals and Radio Communication Matter
Out on the water, there are no traffic lights or painted lanes. Instead, safety depends on visual and sound signals, navigation lights, and radio communication. These systems allow vessels to understand each other’s intentions, warn of hazards, and call for help when needed.
Even on a calm summer day, a simple misunderstanding can lead to a dangerous situation. Learning the basic “language” of boating signals and radio use is one of the best investments you can make in your safety—and in the safety of others.
The Most Important Visual Signals
Visual signals tell other boaters who you are and what you’re doing. They’re especially important in low visibility or when vessels are operating close together.
- Navigation Lights: At night or in poor visibility, all boats must display navigation lights. A sailboat under sail shows red (port) and green (starboard) sidelights and a white stern light. A power-driven vessel adds a white masthead light visible from the front and sides.
- Day Shapes: During daylight, certain shapes indicate a vessel’s status. A black ball means the vessel is anchored. A cone with the point down means a sailboat is also using its engine. Two black balls vertically aligned indicate a vessel not under command.
- Signal Flags: The International Code of Signals uses flags to send short messages. For example, the “A” flag means “Diver down—keep clear,” and the “N” over “C” combination means “No” or “Negative.”
Knowing these signals helps you interpret what other vessels are doing—and helps them understand you.
Radio Communication – Your Lifeline on the Water
A VHF marine radio is one of the most important safety tools on board. It allows you to communicate with other boats, marinas, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Unlike cell phones, VHF radios work offshore and can broadcast distress calls that everyone in range can hear.
Key Channels
- Channel 16 (156.8 MHz): The international distress, safety, and calling channel. Use it for emergencies, safety messages, and initial contact with other vessels.
- Channel 9: Often used for non-commercial hailing and calling between recreational boaters.
- Channel 22A: Used by the U.S. Coast Guard to relay safety and weather information after initial contact on Channel 16.
How to Make a Distress Call
If you’re in grave and imminent danger, use the distress call “MAYDAY” followed by:
- Your vessel’s name and call sign
- Your position (latitude and longitude or a clear description)
- The nature of your emergency (fire, sinking, man overboard, etc.)
- The type of assistance you need
- The number of people on board
Repeat the message until you receive a response. If the situation is urgent but not life-threatening, use “PAN PAN” instead. For safety messages, such as a floating hazard, use “SECURITÉ.”
Good Radio Etiquette – Clear, Calm, and Correct
Keep your radio messages short, clear, and professional. Avoid unnecessary chatter on Channel 16, and always listen before transmitting to avoid interrupting others. Speak slowly and distinctly, and repeat key information to confirm understanding.
In the U.S., anyone operating a VHF radio on a recreational vessel does not need a license, but it’s strongly recommended to take a Marine Radio Operator Permit course or a boating safety class that covers radio procedures. Knowing the correct protocol can make all the difference in an emergency.
Sound Signals – When You Can’t See Each Other
In fog, rain, or darkness, sound signals are often the only way to communicate. A prolonged blast (four to six seconds) means a power-driven vessel is underway. Two short blasts indicate a turn to port, while one short blast means a turn to starboard. Five short blasts signal danger or confusion.
Sound signals are also used in narrow channels, harbors, and when overtaking another vessel. Even if you rarely use your horn, knowing what these signals mean can prevent collisions and save lives.
Safety Begins with Preparation
